More than words

30 Nov

Love is a word that is commonly thrown around lightly in the same light as words such as coffee, break, and maybe, among others nowadays.  The intensity of the word itself watered down by years of being desensitized by many books and television shows that blur the lines between love, attraction and passion.

There was a time that love for me was just a way of getting what I needed physically and emotionally. But as I still am learning, true love is more than that. There had been a time wherein I was so convinced that I loved a certain group of people, yet by true definition discovered that I lacked what love truly is all about.

I like what Rick Warren says about love in his daily devotional mailing list that I am subscribed to entitled Love Is Something You Do.

Love is more than attraction and more than arousal. It’s also more than sentimentality, like so many of today’s songs suggest. By this standard, is love dead when the emotion is gone? No, not at all. Because love is an action; love is a behavior.

This reminds me of a song of a favorite band of mine that I listened to a lot in High School entitled Luv is a Verb. DC Talk’s lyrics are very simplistic in their description of what love is: love is a serious word, love is a verb. It was just in recent years, thankfully due to the many prayers of people for me and through my  loving family, that I am starting to understand that love is an action word.

In today’s devotional pastor Rick Warren continues:

“the Bible says, “Let us stop just saying we love each other; let us really show it by our actions” (1 John 3:18b NLT). We can talk a good act: “I love people.” But do we really love them? Do you really love them? Our love is revealed in how we act toward them”.
